Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers (56-58, 24-20) got another good performance on the mound from Johnny Hellweg and finished off the sweep of the Lake Elsinore Storm (58-57, 26-19) winning 7-3 to move to within 1.5 games of the first place Storm. The 66ers also have a nine game lead in the Cal League South wild card race.

The 66ers took the early lead in the second inning. Dillon Baird got aboard via a single to right field. David Harris then tripled to centerfield scoring Baird. Jimenez subsequently brought Harris in on an RBI single to centerfield. Jon Karcich gave Inland Empire the 3-0 lead when he tripled to deep centerfield scoring Jimenez.

Lake Elsinore got three runs back in the fourth inning as they tallied four hits in the frame. Only two of the runs in the inning were earned however as an error was committed on an attempted pickoff move by Hellweg. Besides that shaky inning for 66ers starter Johnny Hellweg, he was able to stifle the potent Storm offense the rest of the night. He picked up his fifth of the season win going six innings giving up three runs (two earned), five hits and struck out eight batters along the way.

Inland Empire regained the lead in the fifth and then tacked on one more in the sixth inning to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Then in the seventh inning, Kole Calhoun hit a moon-shot two-run homerun over the centerfield wall to make it a lead the Storm could not recover from.

Ariel Pena (9-4, 4.29 ERA) will head to the hill for the 66ers on Thursday night opposite Diogenes Rosario (5-5, 5.58 ERA) as the 66ers will be on the road taking on the Visalia Rawhide. They return home on August 15th to play the High Desert Mavericks after the four game series in Visalia.
