(VISALIA, CA

) - In a game with two very good pitchers with very different styles and both throwing very well, one defensive lapse made the difference.

A fielding error opened up the door to one extra run as Visalia defeated Lancaster 2-1 Tuesday night at Recreation Park.

The game pitted the power arm of Visalia's Trevor Bauer, the third selection is this summer's draft, against the surgical precision of Lancaster All Star Jake Buchanan.

Bauer struck out the first five batters he faced and fanned eight hitters in his four innings.

Buchanan was more efficient, inducing harmless grounders and fly balls for most of the night.

All of the scoring came in the fourth inning and it started with the JetHawks.

Jio Mier, a former teammate of Bauer growing up, singled and stole second base.

That set up a base hit from Austin Wates, driving in Mier to give Lancaster a 1-0 lead.

Visalia rallied with two outs in its half of the fourth inning.

Bobby Borchering doubled in the tying run.

Alfredo Marte hit a pop fly in foul territory near the plate.

Jonathan Meyer, the top defensive third baseman in the league, raced in but had the ball tip off the end of his glove for an error.

Marte used the reprieve to double to center field, driving in Marte and giving the Rawhide the lead.

Neither team scored the rest of the way, although the JetHawks had a few chances.

Lancaster's best opportunity came when Jonathan Singleton led off the seventh inning with a double.

However, he was stranded at third base.

Meyer's hit streak was snapped after matching a career-high by reaching with a hit in 14 consecutive games.

After a day off, the JetHawks will begin a seven-game homestand at the Hangar Thursday night against San Jose.

Andrew Robinson (5-8) will start for Lancaster against Kelvin Marte (9-6) of the Giants.

The game starts at 7:00 and will be broadcast live on radio by 87.7 Kickin' Country and online at CSN at JetHawks.com (click the listen live link).

The Pre-Game Show starts at 6:45.

The JetHawks return home Thursday, August 11 to open a seven-game homestand against the San Jose Giants and the Modesto Nuts.
