Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers pitching corps of Sean Newcomb, Harrison Cooney and Geoff Broussard handcuffed the host Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday night at The Diamond in a 5-0 victory. The win evened the three-game set at a game-apiece and snapped the Sixers four-game losing streak. It was the third time in 2015 that the 66ers pitching staff shutout out an opponent and the second time that they have blanked the Storm in Lake Elsinore.
Starter Kyle Lloyd (5-8) pitched well for the Storm but ran into trouble in the third inning. Bo Way and Mike Fish each singled. Lloyd then won a 12-pitch battle with Eric Aguilera but gave up a double off the wall in left to Andrew Daniel to score both runners and open the scoring 2-0. Lloyd then retired the next ten men he faced. His final line in the loss was 6IP, 8H, 2ER, 0BB, 5Ks.
Inland Empire starter Sean Newcomb was dominant. The 6'5" lefty rolled through six innings of work. He allowed just three hits and a walk and struck out eight batters to earn his sixth victory in the Cal League against just one defeat. Newcomb threw 92 pitches on the night.
The 66ers (48-51, 13-16) added a single run in the seventh when shortstop Erick Salcedo singled to open the frame. He stole second and moved to third on the same play due to a passed ball. He would score when Fish bounced into a double play and make it 3-0. IE added a run on Tyler Palmer's RBI double in the eighth. The Sixers capped their scoring in the top of the ninth when Salcedo doubled to open the frame and Fish tagged a double, his third hit of the ninth and the club's sixth two-bagger of the affair to make it 5-0.
That was plenty for the bullpen as Harrison Cooney tossed two hitless frames in relief of Newcomb. Geoff Broussard finished off the shutout with perfect ninth inning. It was the ninth time this year that the Storm have been shutout and the third time in their current home stand (oddly enough, all by a score of 5-0). Daniel, Michael Strentz, Caleb Adams, Salcedo and Fish all had multi-hit games in the victory.
The series concludes on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. It can be heard live at 66ers.com.
