O'Neill and Wilson Homer, Blaze Lose 13-2
July 29, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The High Desert Mavericks drove angry on ScholarShare Family Tuesday at Sam Lynn Ballpark, failing to score in the 1st inning before plating 12 runs over the next five frames and running away from the Bakersfield Blaze for a cruising 13-2 victory.
The game started promisingly enough, but after Bakersfield scored the first two runs of the night, the Mavericks plated 13 unanswered to run away.
The two the Blaze got were exciting, if nothing else. In the bottom of the 1st, Tyler O'Neill and Austin Wilson went back-to-back with a pair of rocket-shot homers to left for a 2-0 lead. The homer was O'Neill's 21st of the year and Wilson's seventh.
From there, nothing but sorrow. Richelson Pena (W, 8-6) settled in for High Desert, working five additional scoreless frames to pick up the win, and Anyelo LeClerc (S, 2) pitched the final three frames for the rare three-inning save.
In the top of the 2nd, the Mavs got on the board with a run on three singles, though the Blaze lead would last just an additional half inning, as, in the 3rd, the Mavs popped off for five runs on a pair of multi-run homers, chasing Scott DeCecco (L, 0-1) and grabbing a lead they would not relinquish.
The fun for High Desert (and pain for Bakersfield) continued, with the Mavs scoring two runs in each of the next three innings, with two off Aaron Brooks and four off Carlos Misell, and by the 6th the Mavs had built a 12-2 lead.
Kyle Schepel pitched the final three innings for the Blaze, allowing just a solo homer to slow what was a difficult Mavs lineup to handle on this Tuesday evening. Along with Kyle, Tyler O'Neill provided yet another bright spot, collecting three more hits in this contest to raise his season average to .263. He has also drawn the nickname "Popeye" from the Blaze press box.
The Blaze sit at 3-3 on the homestand with one more game to go with the Mavs. Dan Altavilla will oppose Reed Garrett in a 7:45pm Alianza Nonprofit Wednesday start. Gates open at 6:45pm. Fans can bring e-waste to the park to get in for free.
Fans can listen to the game online at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
