Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lancaster, CA- The hitter-friendly Clear Channel Stadium worked in favor of the 66ers on Thursday. Inland Empire (20-19, 52-57) rode a big fifth inning and the arm of Johnny Hellweg to a 9-1 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks (14-26, 42-68).
Hellweg provided a tremendous encore Friday's five-inning, no-hit performance. The righty had his streak of scoreless innings snapped at 13 but went on to finish six innings in which he allowed just one run on two hits. He struck out seven JetHawks and walked two.
On the heels of Hellweg's strong start, Buddy Boshers helped preserve the victory. The left-hander held Lancaster scoreless on two hits through two innings of relief. Kevin Nabors worked a scoreless ninth to secure the victory.
Inland Empire backed its starter with three runs through the first four innings, but posted a five-spot in the fifth. A one-out single by Dwayne Bailey began a string of six consecutive hits by the 66ers, the back end of which were run-scoring doubles by Eric Oliver, Dillon Baird and Carlos Ramirez. Matt Long also drove in a run for the 66ers in the inning and Inland Empire added a ninth run in the seventh.
With the series even at a game apiece, the 66ers turn to Ariel Pena (9-4, 4.18 ERA) in Friday's rubber game of the three-game set. The California League leader in strikeouts is set to oppose Andrew Robinson (5-8, 6.02 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians pregame show with Sam Farber on AM 1050 KCAA.
