San Jose Giants News Release
ADELANTO - Back-to-back triples from Gary Brown and Ehire Adrianza started the game and the San Jose Giants never trailed in 6-3 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. Luke Anders added a solo home run while Chris Heston tossed six effective innings on the mound as San Jose bounced back from a loss in the series opener a night earlier. The win improved the Giants' overall record to 73-37.
Heston (10-4) earned the win after scattering nine hits with three runs allowed. The right-hander, who has won his last three starts, walked just one and struck out seven. Jake Dunning picked-up his fourth save after striking out three over two scoreless innings of work to finish the game.
Brown (2-for-5, 3B, SB), Anders (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Nick Noonan (2-for-4, 2 RBI, SB) all had multi-hit games to lead San Jose offensively.
Brown hit the second pitch of the game thrown by Mavericks starter Austin Hudson into the right field corner for a triple before Adrianza hammered a triple off the fence in deep right center for a 1-0 Giants lead. Noonan then singled sharply into center plating Adrianza to make it 2-0 before an out was even recorded.
San Jose extended their lead in the top of the second inning as Jarrett Parker led off with an infield single before Anders' one-out, RBI double down the left field line.
Heston worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning before the Mavericks struck for single runs in the second and third frames to cut into the Giants lead. In the bottom of the second, Mario Martinez reached on a one-out infield single, took second base on a wild pitch and scored on Trevor Coleman's two-out, RBI double to the left center gap.
Then in the third, Denny Almonte doubled to leadoff before coming home three batters later on Jamie McOwen's sacrifice fly.
High Desert though would get no closer in the contest as the Giants responded with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Brown singled and stole second. Adrianza then drew a walk before Noonan lined a single up the middle to score Brown. Tommy Joseph followed with a bloop single down the right field line as Adrianza raced home to make it 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, Anders blasted a two-out, solo homer to deep right field. The home run was Anders' 10th of the season and it extended the San Jose lead to 6-2.
Heston held the Mavericks off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings before High Desert rallied in the sixth. Martinez led off with a single before Joe Dunigan doubled to put runners on second and third with none out, however Heston was able to limit the damage to one run. The Giants starter recovered to strikeout Coleman before Gabriel Noriega flied out to shallow right field. With Almonte at the plate, Heston uncorked a wild pitch allowing Martinez to score, but retired the hitter on a groundout to shortstop ending the inning.
Osiris Matos (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) pitched the bottom of the seventh in his season debut with the Giants and allowed a one-out infield single to Leury Bonilla before a walk to Jamie McOwen. However, with the potential tying run at the plate, Matos induced Steven Proscia to groundout before a strikeout of Martinez.
Dunning (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then pitched 1-2-3 eighth inning before working around a two-out double from Bonilla in the ninth. Dunning struck out McOwen on an 0-2 pitch to finish the game and leave the tying run in the on-deck circle.
Hudson (3-4), who was making his first start with the Mavericks after 33 relief appearances, suffered the loss. He allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits over two innings of work.
