Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Sixers slugged three homers and rode a solid outing from Tim Sexton to beat the Mavericks 8-1 Saturday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
Inland Empire struck first in the fourth. J.C. Ramirez loaded the bases with no outs, but was able to get out of the inning only allowing one run on an RBI groundout by Johan Garcia.
In the fifth, Scott Van Slyke got the power display started with a towering shot to left to extend the lead to 2-0 and give him his 21st homer on the season.
The Mavericks scored their lone run in the seventh when Jamie McOwen reached on a walk, moved to third on an infield single and a passed ball and ultimately scored on a single by Carlos Peguero.
The seventh inning proved to be bigger for the 66ers. After Elian Herrera reached on a bunt single against Juan Zapata, Justin Fuller slammed a home run to right. Van Slyke then reached on an infield single and was driven home on a Steven Caseres blast to the same spot in right field to bring the score to 7-1. The homer by Caseres was his first in 37 games.
Inland Empire (53-66) added two more insurance runs in the eighth against Travis Mortimore to bring the final score to 8-1.
The Mavs (68-51) had five base runners thrown out on the base paths with two caught stealing, a pickoff, and two thrown out trying to advance.
Sexton (8-11, 3.17) earned the win for Inland Empire, throwing 7 strong innings and allowing 1 unearned run on 6 hits while striking out 3 batters.
J.C. Ramirez (6-9, 5.01) pitched well Saturday night but was tagged with the loss for High Desert, allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. The right-hander struck out 4 and walked 3 66ers hitters in the losing effort.
The 66ers will close out the three-game series against High Desert Sunday evening at 6:05 P.M. on a Family Day at the ballpark. Fans can get up to five Bullpen Box tickets for just $10 on Sunday and enjoy an evening of 66er baseball. Inland Empire will send RHP Justin Miller (0-2, 6.00) to the mound against the Mavericks' LHP Mauricio Robles (0-1, 8.53).
