August 15, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Andres Perez made the most of his home debut for Inland Empire with a walk-off single in the tenth to win it 6-5 Friday night over the High Desert Mavericks.
After striking out Elian Herrera to open the bottom of the tenth, Stephen Penney loaded the bases on two singles and a fielding error by Alex Liddi at third base. Perez, who had been 1-for-4 on the night, stepped up to the plate and smashed a deep liner over the head of the drawn in Tyson Gillies in center field to bring home the game-winning run.
The 66ers appeared to be in complete control through the first four innings of the game with no-hit pitching from Kyle Smit and back-to-back homers in the fourth by Trayvon Robinson and Scott Van Slyke to stake them to a 3-0 lead against Steven Hensley.
The Mavs picked up three runs to tie it in the fifth on an RBI single from Travis Scott and a two-run single by Jamie McOwen, who was thrown out at second by Van Slyke trying to stretch his hit into a double, killing the rally.
The Sixers tacked on a run in the bottom half of the fifth when Herrera lined a triple to right and scored on a Justin Fuller single, but Joe Dunigan struck back with a vengeance in the sixth by slugging a monstrous home run over the wall in right and on to E Street.
The back-and-forth battle continued with Inland Empire (52-66) adding a run in the eighth and High Desert (68-50) coming back to tie it with a run of their own in the ninth.
Marcel Prado (2-2, 4.11) picked up the win by going 1 and 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just 3 hits.
Smit went 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.
The 66ers continue their homestand Saturday, August 15 with the High Desert Mavericks. RHP Tim Sexton (7-11, 3.34) gets the call for the Sixers against RHP J.C. Ramirez (6-8, 5.19) of the Mavs. Following the game Saturday there will be a fireworks display sure to brighten things up a bit.
