66ers Fall 7-5 to Mavs, Lose Series

Adelanto, CA- The High Desert Mavericks jumped to a 5-0 lead against in the first two innings on Sunday against the Inland Empire 66ers and held on for a 7-5 win. The loss was the 66ers third consecutive contest dropped over their last two days as the Mavericks took the four-game set three-games-to-one.

The Mavericks (64-54, 27-21) scored a pair of runs in the first off Harrison Cooney (1-11) on RBI singles from Joe Jackson and Ronald Guzman. High Desert added three runs in the second on a two-run homer from Tripp Martin, his third in two days and 11th on the year, as well as a RBI single from Isiah Kiner-Falefa to make it 5-0.

The 66ers fought back against starter Luis Parra getting two runs in the third on a RBI single from Brandon Bayardi as well as a run on a wild pitch but the 66ers left the bases loaded. IE got another run in the fourth when Tyler Palmer tripled and came home on Bo Way's RBI grounder. The Mavs made it 6-3 with an unearned run in the fourth. Inland Empire (58-60, 23-25) got two runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. Stephen McGee had an RBI single and Palmer tagged a RBI double. Palmer finished the game three-for-four falling a homer shy of the cycle.

Jose Monegro earned the win with three innings of work out of the pen for the Mavericks. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits with two walks and two K's to improve to 1-0. Cooney allowed just one hit after the second inning in the loss but finished with six innings allowing five earned runs with two walks and eight K's. The Mavs added a run in the eighth on a two-out Alberto Triunfel RBI double to make it 7-5. Dakota Watts tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first save.
