Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga completed its perfect regular season run against Lake Elsinore, downing the Storm 9-1 at LoanMart Field on Sunday evening.
The Quakes (26-23, 67-52) went 15-0 against the San Diego Padres' affiliate at LoanMart Field in 2015, outscoring Lake Elsinore 24-8 in this three-game series to complete their domination at 8408 Rochester Avenue. The two squads will meet at The Diamond from September 1st through 3rd to close out the season series.
Rancho Cucamonga trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first when they went to work against left-handed starter Travis Radke (0-2). Tim Locastro was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Paul Hoenecke doubled down the right field line, scoring Locastro. Jacob Scavuzzo doubled into the left field corner, plating Hoenecke. Kyle Garlick rolled a single up the middle, chasing Hoenecke home. Tyler Ogle blasted a two-run homer to left for his 18th of the season. Spencer Navin capped the six-run rally with a solo home run to left-center field for his first in a Quakes' uniform, staking his club to a 6-1 advantage.
Lake Elsinore (12-37, 43-76) tallied the initial run in the top of the first against Quakes' starter Trevor Oaks, a Riverside native who was making his California League debut. Nick Torres drew a two-out walk. Marcus Davis singled to right field. Ryan Miller delivered a base-hit to center field, scoring Torres for a 1-0 Storm lead.
Following that early hiccup, Oaks settled into a groove. The right-hander lasted four and one-third innings, allowing one run, three hits and a walk while striking out two. The 22-year-old retired each of the last eight men he faced and left to a standing ovation among most in the LoanMart Field crowd.
Rancho Cucamonga added another run against Radke in the bottom of the second. Alex Verdugo doubled to left field and trotted home on Johan Mieses' double to center, giving the home team a 7-1 cushion.
The Quakes tacked on another run against Storm reliever Zech Lemond in the sixth. Locastro walked and scored all the way from first on a double by Verdugo, making it an 8-1 contest. For Verdugo, rated by Baseball America as the fifth-best prospect in the Dodgers' system, it was his first RBI at the High-A level.
Rancho Cucamonga scored an insurance run in the eighth against reliever Rafael De Paula. Ogle drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Locastro doubled off the left field wall, plating Ogle for a 9-1 margin.
The Quakes' bullpen was outstanding on Sunday. Michael Johnson (6-1) pitched one and two-third scoreless innings to earn the victory in relief. Brock Stewart followed with two scoreless innings while striking out three. Rob Rogers tossed a perfect ninth to complete the series sweep.
With the win, Rancho Cucamonga improves its California League-best home record to 38-22. They have won four straight games overall and remain one-and-a-half games behind High Desert for first place in the South Division's second-half standings.
The Quakes welcome High Desert to LoanMart Field for a three-game series, beginning Monday night. Rancho Cucamonga will send right-hander Scott Barlow (5-2, 2.92 ERA) to the mound, while the Mavericks counter with right-hander David Perez (2-0, 4.40 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
