Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - It rained Teddy Bears inside Rabobank Arena this past Saturday night, as 5,475 stuffed animals came down from the stands at the Eighth Annual Teddy Bear Toss sponsored by 29 Eyewitness News, KERN 1410 AM and Wells Fargo Bank.
The weekend after Thanksgiving means one thing in Condorstown - Teddy Bear Toss! A crowd of 8,743, fourth largest in team history, didn't have to wait long to send the fur flying as Sean Venedam scored the first goal just 5:59 into the first period. For the next several minutes fans flung stuffed animals onto the ice, and it took more than 40 volunteers and 15 minutes to clear the fur from the floor, which brought the all-time total to 37,829 stuffed animals. The Condors went on to beat the defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces, 6-3, the third time they've knocked off the Aces this season.
"It's incredible to see all the bears flying through the air in support of something special," said Condors Team President, Matthew Riley. "Every year the Teddy Bear Toss is one of the most anticipated events on the Condors schedule and the fans are always there for the less-fortunate."
"The United Way is very grateful to the Condors and their fans for their generosity," said United Way Special Events Coordinator, Megan Beeman. "Because of the help from the Condors, 32 local organizations will be able to make Christmas a little brighter for local children."
The Condors finish their two-game road trip Tuesday in Fresno at 7 p.m. Bakersfield returns home for a pair of games Friday, Dec. 1 vs. Fresno and Saturday, Dec. 2 against Long Beach. Both games are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Friday is the 106.1 KRAB Radio Toilet Paper Roll Giveaway, with the first 2,000 adults 18-and-older receiving a roll of Fresno Falcons toilet paper. Saturday is the KUZZ 107.9 Nintendo Wii Giveaway, where 20 lucky fans will receive a Nintendo Wii game system.
