3 Goal Second Period Leads to 4-1 Kingston Win in Game 3
March 27, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
In an unusual situation, game three of the series was played in Sudbury rather than North Bay because of a conflict at North Bay Memorial Gardens. Kingston had a much better effort in game two and it lead to a 4-3 victory that tied the series at a game each. In a pivotal game three both teams were looking to get a win in a neutral building to take control of the series. North Bay wanted to hold serve after stealing home ice advantage with a split in Kingston, while the Frontenacs wanted to take advantage of a road game where no team had a home ice advantage.
Both teams had quality scoring chances in the first period, but both goalies were outstanding. Christian Propp made an outstanding glove save on Gabe Vilardi near the midway point of the period. Jeremy Helvig matched him with multiple cross crease sliding saves. It certainly wasn't a defensive period, but with both goaltenders playing well it was a scoreless one. There were no goals, no penalties and the shots were nearly even at 14-12 in favour of North Bay.
The Frontenacs took the game over in the second period and it didn't take them long to get there. Luke Burghardt and Jesse Saban both took penalties in the opening minutes of the period giving Kingston a 5 on 3 power play. Jason Robertson scored quickly into the two-man advantage to put Kingston ahead and allow them to stay on the power play. The lethal Kingston power play struck again when Gabe Vilardi scored his first of the playoffs to give Kingston a pair of goals in the first 3:04 of the second period. North Bay had a bit of push back, but Jeremy Helvig shut them down again. It allowed Kingston to extend their lead to 3-0 in the final minute of the period. Gabe Vilardi scored again with a wicked wrist shot from the slot. Kingston showed the dominant form they are capable of and it set them up with a three-goal lead entering the final period.
North Bay tried to make things interesting early in the third period. Jake Henderson scored in the first minute to get the Battalion on the board and make it 3-1. Kingston didn't allow the goal to get to them and continued to control the game for the most part. Jason Robertson restored the three-goal lead at 3:43 of the third period. From that point on Kingston shut the Battalion down and held on to a 4-1 lead to take the victory and take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series.
Game four of the series takes place on Thursday night in North Bay at 7 PM. The series shifts back to Kingston on Saturday night for game five. Puck drop is at 7 PM. Tickets for game five are available now.
