2023-24 Player Profile: Ty Gibson

Ty Gibson is one of four overagers currently on the Everett Silvertips roster, and the only one on defense. The Victoria native reached career-highs in all offensive categories while accruing some of the toughest defensive minutes on the team.

As he enters his final junior season, Gibson has set high expectations for himself and the team.

2022-23 in review

It was another steady year for the durable Gibson, who skated in 66 contests last season. In fact, he has only missed three of a possible 147 WHL games between the regular season and playoffs in the last two years.

The name of Gibson's game is consistency and dependability. He netted six goals and 18 assists as a 19-year-old in 2022-23, including three tallies on the powerplay- a role he grew into as the season wore on.

Gibson highlighted the team's autumn tour of the Eastern Division as a particularly fond memory. The Tips posted a 4-2 record on the trip, while Gibson recorded his first career multi-goal game in a win over the Sasktaoon Blades on Nov. 4.

Becoming a leader

Gibson is entering his fourth full WHL campaign, assuming the mantle of elder statesman on the blueline from former alternate captain Aidan Sutter. His status as one of only three 19-year-olds on the roster last season has granted him experience as a veteran presence.

"I thought I kind of took more of a leadership role [in 2022-23] being an older defenseman," Gibson said after the season. "I've learned that well from guys in the past."

Since making his WHL debut on Sep. 21, 2019, Gibson has had the opportunity to learn and grow alongside future NHL prospects like Wyatte Wylie, Gianni Fairbrother and Ronan Seeley.

Gibson accrued just 19 penalty minutes in 66 games last year, with 15 in 67 games the year prior. His disciplined, intelligent defensive play coupled with his work ethic off the ice earned him the Most Dedicated Award at the 2023 Silvertips team awards ceremony, as determined by Everett's coaching staff.

Going on a run

His rookie season ended with a division championship during the Covid-shortened 2021 bubble. Two first-round exits later, Gibson is hungry to take one last stab at an Ed Chenowyth Cup.

"That's going to be in the back of my head," Gibson said of the team's overtime loss in the decisive Game 5 in Portland back in April. "I want to be coming in bigger, stronger, faster. Hopefully we can go on a little run next year."
