Sudbury Wolves News Release
After a busy off-season, the Sudbury Wolves opened their 2018 Training Camp on Tuesday afternoon welcoming 56 players to the Sudbury Arena, including returning players, draft picks, and free agents. Over the course of the first two days of camp, fans had the opportunity to see first overall pick, Quinton Byfield, as well as 3rd overall CHL import Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in action.
Players expressed their enthusiasm to be back in the Nickel City after a summer of training. "It's really exciting,"Â Davis Levin said upon entering camp. "It feels good to be home."
To start, the players were split into three teams (blue, white, and grey) where the coaches put them through the paces including a practice for each team and several scrimmages. With many returning players, youngsters and veterans alike were pushing hard for spots on the roster. The compete level throughout camp impressed management, coaches, and veteran players including Macauley Carson who noted, "It's exciting because we have a lot of new guys, a lot of guys coming back that skated yesterday and this past weekend. Everybody looks like they have gotten better over the summer, so it's been kind of a forecast of what is going to be an exciting year."
Following the first round of practices, the players were split into two teams to compete in two Blue vs. White games. Team White took Game 1 with a score of 3-0, as Team Blue won Game 2 by a 3-2 final. Standout players included Quinton Byfield who had nine points over three scrimmages with three goals and six assists. Drew Wawrow had a solid camp recording three assists in the first Blue vs. White game, helping on all three goals. In four games, David Levin and Nolan Hutcheson both recorded four goals in solid training camp performances.
After a total of five scrimmages throughout training camp, VP Hockey Operations and General Manager Rob Papineau felt confident in the level of hockey played. "This was our most competitive camp in the last three years,"Â said Papineau. "We are extremely excited for the season ahead and have many great prospects in the system. The reality of a competitive camp is we had to reassign many good players to other teams outside of the OHL."
Recently announced, three players have committed to the hockey club including Isaak Phillips, Drew Wawrow, and Owen Robinson . After exceptional play from the three prospects, they will continue competing in camp as a total of 29 players now remain. A complete list of players can be found below.
Action now turns to exhibition as the Sudbury Wolves open up their pre-season tomorrow night at home against the Ottawa 67's at 7:05pm.
