Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders, the Kinsmen Club of Prince Albert and the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group are pleased to announce the 2018 Sportsperson of the Year and Male & Female Athletes of the Year at the upcoming celebrity banquet featuring special guest Adam Oates.
Local honourees Jesse Byrne, Shantel Kalika, Ian Litzenberger and Kalen Kovitch will be awarded at the eleventh Annual Prince Albert Kinsmen/Raiders Sportsman Dinner on Oct. 26th at the Art Hauser Centre.
Prince Albert's Male Athlete of the Year is Jesse Byrne, the greatest bullfighter in the world. From a young age, growing up on his farm east of Prince Albert, he found his passion of bullriding, and ultimately, bull fighting. Following in his father's footsteps, Jesse has gone on to have a professional career fighting bulls on the sports elite tour all across North America.
Shantel Kalika is the Female Athlete of the Year. Shantel has excelled in the male-dominated field of NASCAR racing, being one of the few females to compete. She was the first female to win the 2016 Pro Truck series championship. She finished in second place last year, and is currently sitting in first in local points in the Sportsman division at Wyant Raceway. She has excelled in a male-denominated sport.
The Sportsman of the Year award will be shared by the Project Triple Play committee. Through a four-year, multi-million dollar fundraising effort, Ian Litzenberger and Kalen Kovitch were instrumental in marketing venue and infrastructure improvements at Prime Minister's Park for several recent high-profile tournaments, including the 2018 World Junior Men's Softball Championships. Their efforts ensured a successful 2018 summer event and world-class local sports facilities for years to come.
NHL All-Star and Hall-of-Famer Adam Oates will be the featured guest speaker for this year's Kinsmen Sportsman Dinner. Known as an elite playmaker, his career total of 1079 assists was the fifth highest total in NHL history at the time of his 2004 retirement. He is the NHL's 18th all-time point leader, and holds the record for most points all-time of any NHL player who also played NCAA Hockey. After retiring as a player, he served as an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils prior to joining the Capitals as their Head Coach for two seasons between 2012 and 2014. Adam played in five NHL All Star Games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2017, he was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
This year's Kinsmen Sportsman Banquet will take place on Friday, October 26th in the Ches Leach Lounge at the Art Hauser Centre. The evening will include a live and silent auction, prime rib dinner (beverages included), and games and opportunities to win many great prizes. All proceeds raised through this charity fundraiser will benefit the Prince Albert Raiders Education Fund and "Our Community's Greatest Need" through the Kinsmen Club of Prince Albert.
