Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - Frederick Keys C Matt Wieters will be promoted to Double-A Bowie Friday, June 27th to join the Baysox as they return home to face the Altoona Curve at Prince George's Stadium. Wieters, a Carolina League All-Star, leaves the league in the top-3 in batting average (.345), home runs (15), on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.576), and attempted basestealers percentage against (.455).
Wieters professional debut started with a two blasts at Harry Grove Stadium on April 4th as the Keys catcher hit home runs in each of his first two at-bats. The outstanding opener would not be an anomaly as Wieters hit over .330 in all three months with Frederick. His .342 average is the third best in the Keys 20-year history for a player having played more than sixty games.
The Orioles drafted Wieters with the fifth pick of the first round in the 2007 draft out of Georgia Teach. Wieters was the third two-time first team All-American from the baseball powerhouse along with long time big leaguers Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Varitek. He was the first top-5 selection out of Georgia Tech since Baltimore native Mark Teixeira was selected with the fifth pick of the 2001 draft by Texas. Wieters signed an Orioles record $6 million dollar bonus and played in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League before officially beginning his career in Frederick this April.
Zach Dillon, who was the Keys starting catcher during their 2007 championship season will return to the Keys. Dillon, 25, hit .275 finishing with a surge after batting .391 in the month of August. He hit .333 in six games with six runs scored in Frederick's playoff run to the Carolina League Championship. In 2008, Dillon has hit .278 in 12 games with Double-A Bowie.
Partial and season ticket plans are still available for the duration of the 2008 season. For information pertaining to these plans or other group events at Harry Grove Stadium contact the Keys Group Department at 301-815-9900.
