SPHL Playoffs Set / Game 1 Friday in Knoxville
Knoxville, TN., March 20, The Southern Professional League Playoffs start this week with four teams playing a first round single game elimination round. Teams will be re-seeded for the second round, The Knoxville Ice Bears will host the number four seed on Friday Night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum, doors open at 6:30pm, Puck drops at 7:30pm.
The BIG QUESTION now is whom will the Ice Bears play Friday Night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum ? The answer to that will not known until Late Wednesday Night. Here is how it will break down, Huntsville will travel to Jacksonville Wednesday, If Huntsville wins we get them, If Jacksonville wins, and Columbus defeats Fayetteville also on Wednesday Night we get Columbus. If both Huntsville and Columbus lose, then we get Fayetteville.
The final standings came down to the final game of the SPHL season, and it took overtime to decide it. The Jacksonville Barracudas traveled to Huntsville to face the Havoc. While the Havoc was locked into sixth place win or lose the Barracudas needed a win to claim the all important second place.
The prized Second place would have given the Barracudas a first round bye, and home Ice advantage for the second round. With a score of 3 to 3 at the end of regulation, Huntsville's Steve Howard ended it with a goal 31 seconds into overtime. The upset gave second place to the Macon Trax and sets up a rematch in Jacksonville between the Barracudas and Havoc for a single game elimination expected to be played Tuesday or Wednesday night in Jacksonville. While both Jacksonville and Macon have identical records of 33-23 totaling 66 points, Macon wins the first tie breaker head to head play.
Tickets can be purchased on the Ice Bears web site, at the Knoxville Coliseum Box Office (Mon-Fri 10-5), Ticketsunlimited 865-656-4444 or ticketsunlimited.com. Groups of 10 or more will receive group discounts by contacting John Scott at jscott@knoxvilleicebears.com or 865-525-7825.
