16 inning game goes to Braves, 5-4

PEARL, MISS. (JUNE 1, 2009) - In the longest game played in Trustmark Park history, the Mississippi Braves (23-28) beat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (21-29) by the score of 5-4. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 16th, Mumba Rivera (5-4) hit Concepcion Rodriguez with the bases loaded and one out to win it. The game took 4:47 minutes and the Braves came back twice as the game stretched into Tuesday morning.

Diamond Jaxx starter, Steve Bray dealt seven scoreless innings on just two hits before turning it over to the pen. Bray fanned six batters and walked nobody. The two hits were bunt singles. Braves starter, Ryne Reynosso also got through seven allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.

With the Jaxx leading 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, Marwin Vega went out for his second inning of relief. Vega walked Willie Cabrera and Kala Ka'aihue to begin the inning. Gorkys Hernandez lined a double down the right field line scoring Cabrera and putting runners on second and third with no one out. Patrick Ryan relieved Vega and struck out Brandon Hicks. With one out, Travis Jones grounded out to Matt Mangini but Ka'aihue scored on the play. J.C. Boscan dug in with the Braves trailing 3-2 and two outs an lined the game tying hit to left scoring Hernandez and sending the game to extras.

In the 11th, Matt Mangini singled to start the inning, then Marshall Hubbard walked. Yamid Haad struck out but a wild pitch advanced Mangini to thid and Hubbard to second with one out. Ogui Diaz hit a sacrifice fly to score Mangini and give the Jaxx a 4-3 lead.

Gorkys Hernandez grounded out to begin the bottom of the 11th. Brandon Hicks reached base on a throwing error by Jaxx second baseman, Ogui Diaz. Travis Jones singled sending Hicks to third. Hicks scored, tying the game at four on the sacrifice fly.

Joe Newby went five innings in extras allowing no earned runs and just one hit. Newby struck out six and walked two. He turned it over to Mumba Rivera in the 15th. Brett Butts, for the Braves pitched four innings in the extra frames allowing only one earned run on three hits.

In the bottom of the 16th, Travis Jones singled to right off of Rivera to start things. Rivera balked sending Jones to second. Phillip Britton bunted Jones to third. With one out, Rivera intentionally passed Greg Creek and Erick Campbell to load the bases. The next batter on a 0-1 pitch, Concepcion Rodriguez was hit by a pitch scoring Jones and winning it for the Braves.

The Jaxx and Braves play a double-header to make up a rain out on April 29th back at Pringles Park. The game one starter for the Jaxx will be RHP Luis Munoz (1-1, 5.19) and the game starter is RHP Kyle Parker (1-2, 3.65). For the Braves, they will go with RHP Kyle Cofield (3-2, 3.60) and in game two, RHP Jeff Lyman (4-3, 3.66). Game one will begin at 6:05 at Trustmark Park, with game two to follow 30 minutes after game one.
