Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - April 8, 2009 - The Colorado 14ers set a new NBA Development League single game scoring record with a 155-129 win over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds at the Broomfield Event Center on Wednesday night. Colorado breaks its own record of 147 set earlier this season in Broomfield against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The 14ers also broke their own D-League record of 49 points in a quarter by scoring 52 in the third period of the win.
Kentrell Gransberry fouled out with nine points, but the other nine Colorado players finished in double figures on the night. The 14ers were led by Trey Gilder's 26 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Billy Thomas added 24 on 5-6 3-point shooting in the win.
"We got on a roll. We have good players and they made shots tonight," said 14ers Head Coach Bob MacKinnon. "We're now 20-3 in Broomfield, and with home court advantage throughout the playoffs I hope that record holds true for us."
Colorado's balanced effort easily overcame Will Conroy's D-League record tying 53 point effort for Albuquerque. Conroy went 15-31 from the field and 18-25 from the free throw line to tie Morris Almond's mark set with the Utah Flash last season. Keith McCloud and James Wright added 19 points apiece for the Thunderbirds in the loss.
The 14ers broke open the game with a 43 point second quarter, as Gilder scored 14 off the bench in the period. Colorado put up 78 first half points on 57% shooting to take a 16 point lead to the locker room. Any hopes Albuquerque had of coming back were dashed in the third quarter, when the 14ers hit 19 of 24 field goals in setting a new D-League record with 52 points in the period. Billy Thomas led the charge going 3-3 from 3-point range and scoring 16 points in the quarter when Colorado pulled away.
The loss for Albuquerque severely cripples their playoff hopes, falling to 23-25 with two games to play. Colorado improves to a D-League best 34-13 on the season with the record setting win.
The Thunderbirds will head home to close out the regular season this weekend against the Tulsa 66ers. Colorado visits Utah on Friday night before finishing the regular season at Reno on Saturday.
