12th Annual Hockey Challenge A Success

SEATTLE - The Seattle Thunderbirds and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska (RMHC) are pleased to announce that the 12th Annual Hockey Challenge, held Saturday, February 27, at ShoWare Center in Kent, raised more than $130,000 for RMHC.

Hockey teams are formed by sponsors that raise money to play in the Challenge. All proceeds from the Challenge directly support operations of the Seattle Ronald McDonald House, which provides a "home-away-from-home" for children and their families receiving medical treatment at Children's Hospital, making each day a little easier. In fact, last year the Seattle Ronald McDonald House provided accommodations for 700 families.

There were six games played at the Challenge on Saturday. The first four games were played by eight teams from various groups at Microsoft and Amazon.com. The T-Birds vs. Portland Winter Hawks game followed the four Challenge games and the event was capped off by the Celebrity All-Star Game. This year's Celebrity All-Star game featured former Seattle Mariners catcher Dan Wilson. The Celebrity Jersey auction also included a Team Canada jersey autographed by former T-Bird Patrick Marleau. Marleau won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

"We are thankful for the participation of all the teams and their fundraising efforts," said Dianna Finnerty, Executive Director of RMHC. "The House is thrilled with the success of the event. It's been a great 12-year partnership and we couldn't ask for better partners than the T-Birds."

"We are very pleased with the success of this year's Challenge," said Ian Henry, T-Birds Director of Public and Media Relations. "We owe a big thank you to all the teams that took part, all the volunteers that helped put the event on and all the T-Birds alumni that took part in the Celebrity All-Star game. We also owe a huge thank you to former Seattle Mariner catcher Dan Wilson for participating and to former T-Bird Patrick Marleau for providing an autographed Team Canada jersey for the jersey auction."

Over the past 11 years the Hockey Challenge has raised over $3.7 million for the Seattle Ronald McDonald House.
