Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Chiefs comeback effort was not enough in Peoria's 8-6 loss to the Beloit Sky Carp Saturday at Dozer Park in front of 4,588 fans.
Beloit scored the first six runs of the night off starter Benjamin Arias. The right-hander was making his High-A debut and went five innings, allowing the six runs and nine hits, walking two and fanning four.
The Sky Carp scored the opening run in the second inning on a Cameron Barstad double, making it 1-0. Beloit made it 2-0 in the top of the third when Javier Sanoja led off with a solo home run.
Beloit's big inning came in the fifth. After Arias got two outs, Yiddi Cappe singled to keep the inning alive. Torin Montgomery followed with a single of his own which slid under the glove of Tyler Reichenborn in centerfield, which plated a run to make it 3-0. Montgomery then scored on an Ynmanol Marinez single to make it 4-0. After a walk, Barstad drove in two with another double and it was 6-0.
Peoria began its climb back into the game in its half of the fifth. Reichenborn led off with a solo home run off of Beloit starter Karson Milbrandt to make it 6-1. After a pair of strikeouts, Milbrandt walked Ramon Mendoza and that was the end of the line for him. Chris Mokma entered and allowed a double to Osvaldo Tovalin. Chris Rotondo followed with a single which plated two runs and made it 6-3. A Thomas Francisco double followed making it a 6-4 game.
Milbrandt went 4 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out seven.
The Chiefs made it a one-run game in the sixth. Alex Iadisernia singled to lead it off. He reached third with two outs when Jimmy Crooks singled off Will Stewart to make it 6-5.
Peoria attempted to tie the game in the seventh with Thomas Francisco at the plate with Rotondo on third and no outs. Francisco hit a fly ball to center field which was caught by Sanoja, who then threw out Rotondo at home who tried to tag up.
Beloit then followed with two runs in the eighth off Edwin Nunez. Barstad and Chase Luttrell started the frame with doubles which made it 7-5. Cristhian Rodriguez plated Luttrell on a single to make it 8-5.
Barstad went 3-for-4 driving in three runs. Sanoja, Cappe, and Montgomery each had two hits.
In the home half of the eighth, Iadisernia got a run back by homering to right-center, his eighth of the year which made it 8-6. He hit the blast off Kyle Crigger, who went on to record a six-out save to preserve the victory for Beloit.
Eight of nine Chiefs recorded at least one hit. Iadisernia, Mendoza, Tovalin, and Rotondo each had two knocks.
Peoria falls to 69-62 and 36-29 in the second half. Beloit improves to 55-75 and 27-37 in the latter half. The Sky Carp take the weeklong series, the first time the Chiefs have lost a series at home since the end of July and just the third series loss at home this year.
The final game of the series and the 2023 regular season is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
