Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Saturday night's contest was shaping up to be one of the better efforts of the season for the Stockton Ports. It ended with one of the more sloppy innings of the year. In a scoreless ballgame in the top of the 10th, Stockton committed three errors that resulted in four unearned runs as the Visalia Rawhide came away with a 4-0 victory at Banner Island Ballpark, Stockton's first shutout loss of the season.

One night after Daniel Gossett had one of the most impressive starts for a Ports pitcher on the season, Brett Graves came through with the best effort of his career. Graves was hardly in any trouble during the course of his outing. The right-hander was sensational but was rendered a no-decision after going eight scoreless innings, the longest outing for any Ports pitcher on the season. Graves allowed five hits while walking one and striking out two.

Meanwhile, Visalia starter Taylor Clarke pitched around a pair of walks in the first inning and around three singles and a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fourth. Clarke was also rendered a no-decision, going six innings and allowing five hits while striking out a career-high nine.

Luis Ramirez entered the game and pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Rawhide while Austin Wright pitched a scoreless eighth. Bud Jeter (5-0) pitched around a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt in the ninth and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to send the game into extra innings.

Carlos Navas (1-1) set the side down in order in the ninth and came back to pitch the 10th. Navas allowed a leadoff single to Dawel Lugo. Colin Bray followed with a sacrifice bunt that Navas tried to field but dropped, an error that put runners at first and second with nobody out. After a sacrifice bunt by Oscar Hernandez, Grant Heyman was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a possible inning-ending double-play. Victor Reyes came up next and hit a double-play ball to second and second baseman Joe Bennie had the ball get through his legs, an error that allowed two runs to score and give the Rawhide a 2-0 lead. After an intentional walk was issued to Marty Herum, Domingo Leyba hit a single to right on which Heyman scored and Reyes scored on a bobble in right field by Seth Brown, the third error of the inning.

Navas suffered the loss, going an inning-and-a-third and allowing four unearned runs on two hits.

Jeter came back to close out the game in the last of the 10th and pitched around a leadoff walk, retiring the next three batters in succession to finish the ballgame and secure the victory.

The Ports and Rawhide play the third game of their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. Heath Fillmyer (3-2, 3.80 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Lucas Irvine (3-0, 2.96 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
