Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
GARY, IN - Starter Kris Regas threw seven scoreless innings, but the Gary Railcats rallied late to top the Birds 3-2 on Thursday night.
Regas had himself a day on Thursday. He pitched seven masterful, scoreless innings, throwing 109 pitches, 64 for strikes, scattering six hits and struck out eight.
Regas and Gary reliever Travis McGee, who came in to start the second, matched each other stride for stride through seven full innings, as both offenses couldn't get anything going.
The Cats turned to their bullpen again in the eighth inning, bringing in veteran lefty Moises Melendez. B.J. Guinn and Aaron Owen greeted Melendez rudely, hitting back-to-back solo homers to kick off the eighth, giving the Birds a late 2-0 advantage.
Gary responded in a big way in the eighth. Chase Harris led off with a walk. Reggie Wilson then hit a towering double to the gap allowing Harris to score all the way from first. Anthony Cheky drove in Wilson with a double of his own, tying the game at two. Cheky advanced to third on a Frank Martinez groundout, then came home to score on an error, giving the Cats a late 3-2 lead.
The Canaries did their best to tie up the game in the top of the ninth. Jake Taylor reached with a lead off single, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Taylor moved up to third on a flyout, but Owen struck out to end the game.
