Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts finished off their penultimate homestand with a 5-4 win over the Kansas City T-Bones Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, claiming their eighth win in nine tries against Kansas City this season.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the eighth, the Wingnuts (52-31) loaded the bases against Josh Tols (5-4) with nobody out, bringing Martin Medina to the plate. Medina sent a fly ball in to left that was deep enough for Brent Clevlen to race home and put Wichita back in front.
Frankie Reed came on in the ninth, and the southpaw set down Kansas City (38-45) in order to close it out and collect his 18th save of the season.
After hitting a walk-off homer for the Wingnuts on Wednesday, Zack Cox was at it again, taking the first pitch he saw from Sean Furney, and launching it for a two-run homer to give Wichita a 2-0 lead in the first.
The T-Bones pegged the Wingnuts back however, plating single tallies in the second, third, and fourth innings to grab a one-run advantage.
Wichita went back ahead in the fifth, as T.J. Mittelstaedt brought home a pair with a two-out two-run single.
Kansas City tied the contest in the seventh, as Anthony Gallas evened the score with an RBI double.
Gage Smith (1-0) came on in the eighth for Wichita, and retired the T-Bones in order in his second appearance with the club to earn the win in relief.
The Wingnuts hit the road Friday as they begin a six-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Yard. Righty Eddie Medina (5-4, 5.37) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Gary has yet to announce their starter for Friday's game. First pitch is set for 7:10, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
