Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers' pitching staff could not get into any sort of rhythm and was hit around by the Schaumburg Flyers' offense in a 20-1 defeat in front of a crowd of 2,670 at Foothills Stadium on Sunday. The crowd was the second largest in Vipers history, second only to the inaugural game in 2005.

Calgary starter Frank James (1-2) took the loss after giving up nine hits and seven runs in just under three innings of work. Kenny Durost (2-1) picked up the win for the Flyers after shutting down the Vipers offense for seven innings, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out nine.

Schaumburg put runs on the board in six different innings including two separate innings where the Flyers scored six runs. The loss set new Viper records for runs allowed in a game with 20 and hits allowed in a game with 24.

The Flyers got out to an early lead with a run in the first inning before putting six more up in the third inning to jump out 7-0. Ryan Walker, Ramon Navarro, Nelson Gord and Chris Weekly all had RBI's in the third inning, putting Schaumburg out front.

Weekly hit his second homerun in as many games in the fourth inning and the Flyers added another six runs in the fifth to go up 14-0. Gord led the way in the fifth by drilling his second homerun of the year, a three-run shot off Brad Rogers to right field.

Gord had four hits on the afternoon in addition to four runs scored and four RBI's. Eric Cole also had a big day for the Flyers, picking up five hits, four runs and two RBI's. Three different Flyers scored four runs while five Schaumburg players had three or more hits in the game.

Schaumburg scored two more runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by Ben Van Iderstine and Walker.

Calgary's lone run of the game came on a Carlos Duncan RBI single in the bottom of the seventh off Durost that scored Drew Miller.

The Flyers polished off their win with four more runs in the eighth inning with two RBI's from Cole, one from Walker and one from Jarrod Patterson.

Calgary will attempt to rebound from the loss on a six-game road trip that will see stops in both Winnipeg and Edmonton. The trip begins Tuesday night at 6:05 PM (MDT) in Winnipeg with a game against the Goldeyes.
