JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-3 in 10 innings on Sunday night on an RBI single by John Lackaff. The JackHammers improve to 10-18 with the win and split a six-game home stand at 3-3.
The JackHammers started the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Bubba Smith. Joliet lost the 1-0 lead when Kevin Cheppenko gave up an RBI single to Keith Hamilton, the second baseman and number nine hitter for Winnipeg.
Joliet jumped out to a 3-1 lead when Dennis Blackmon and Mike Goss hit RBI' s. Blackmon's RBI double scored J.D. Foust, who led off the inning with a single. Blake Gill followed Blackmon's at-bat with a single. Blackmon moved over to third base and scored on a single by Mike Goss.
Winnipeg catcher Aaron Mendoza hit a two-run home run off Cheppenko in the sixth inning. Cheppenko lasted seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits in getting a no-decision.
Joliet left-hander Derrick Ellison, signed earlier in the day to a contract after being released from the Schaumburg Flyers, pitched three innings and allowed no runs on two hits to pick up his first win as a JackHammer.
The JackHammers now travel to Kansas City to take on the T-Bones. Joliet begins a brief four-game roadtrip with a 7:05 first pitch from Community America Ballpark. The pre-game show begins at 6:50 on 1340 WJOL. Luis Villarreal (2-3, 3.89) starts for Joliet.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers released rookie reliever Casery Wernke before the game to make room for Ellison. With the addition of Ellison, Joliet keeps 11 pitchers on the roster. The JackHammer next homestand starts on Friday June 23.
