Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind.-The Northern League of Professional Baseball today announced the managers and coaching staffs for its 2005 All-Star Game, which will be played at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana on Tuesday, July 19.

RailCats manager Greg Tagert has been selected as a coach to serve under South Division managers Andy McCauley of the Schaumburg Flyers and George Tsamis of the St. Paul Saints. The decision to have co-managers was made due to the fact both Schaumburg and St. Paul were in the championship series in 2004. Schaumburg was the South Division champion while St. Paul was the North Division and overall league champion, defeating the Flyers in an exciting five-game series.

Mike Busch, who has guided the expansion Calgary Vipers to their current second place standing, will be the manager of the North Division All-Stars. Busch, a former infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers and hitting coach with the Lincoln Saltdogs, has guided the first year Vipers to a 23-18 record, putting the club just 2.5 games behind Fargo-Moorhead in the first half race. Calgary produced the best winning percentage in the Northern League for June at 16-9 (.640).

Tagert will be joined on the South Division bench by Jackie Hernandez, a coach for St. Paul and Brett Gray, the pitching coach at Schaumburg. Busch will be assisted on the North Division bench by Steve Maddock of Calgary and Bucky Burgau of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

The starting lineups for the 2005 All-Star Game will be selected by Northern League managers, announcers, and media. The reserves and pitching staffs will be chosen by the All-Star managers. The starters will be announced on Monday, July 11 with reserves and pitchers being named on Tuesday, July 12.

The 2005 All-Star Game festivities include a luncheon on Tuesday, July 19 at the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville, Indiana, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Special guests include National Football League Hall of Fame player and coach Mike Ditka and former Negro Leagues great Buck O'Neil. The All-Star Game at U. S. Steel Yard that evening includes a pre-game home run derby, presented by Great Lakes Orthopedics, and performances by the Jesse White Tumblers and the Zooperstars. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The All-Star Game is presented by U.S. Steel Gary Works.
