West Virginia Black Bears Win 2016 Home Opener 12-2

The West Virginia Black Bears celebrated their 2016 Opening Day with a 12-2 win over the Batavia Muckdogs!

CF Sandy Santos started off the bats in the bottom of the first with a hard hit infield single. LF Ty Moore advanced Santos to second with a sac bunt followed by 3B Will Craig's hit by pitch. With 1B Albert Baur up to bat, a wild pitch would advance Santos to third and Craig to second. With Santos in scoring position, Baur's sacrifice fly to left field then allowed Santos to score. DH Jordan George came up with a line drive to left field allowing Craig to score putting the Black Bears on top 2-0.

The scoring continued for the Black Bears in the bottom of the second with a ground ball single to center field by C Arden Pabst. 2B Erik Forgione followed Pabst with a fly ball double to right field scoring Pabst and eventually moving him to third due to a throwing error by Muckdogs RF Alex Fernandez making the score 3-0. With Forgione in scoring position, Santos hit a sac fly to right, allowing Forgione to score adding to the Black Bears lead with a score of 4-0. With Craig on first by a hit on pitch, Baur's single to center field advanced Craig to second and brought up George, who was walked, leaving bases loaded. With bases loaded, RF Matt Diorio walked, scoring Craig (5-0) and moving Baur to second. The Muckdogs made a pitching substitution, replacing starting P Jose Diaz with relief P Connor Bach. Baur scored, George was advanced to third and Diorio to second on a hit by pitch on SS Stephan Alemais pushing the Black Bears lead to 6-0. The Muckdogs pitching continued to struggle as Bach walked Pabst allowing George to score (7-0).

The Muckdogs would get on the board in the top of the third with single to left by CF Jhonny Santos that advanced 2B Samuel Castro who was walked the previous at bat. Fernandez doubled on a line drive to center field scoring Castro and moving Santos to third (7-1). The Muckdogs were able to bring in one more run on a ground out by SS Joseph Chavez that allowed Santos to score making the score 7-2.

In the bottom of the third, the Black Bears extended their lead 8-2 when Bach walked Santos and Moore followed by a sac fly to right allowing Santos to score.

The Black Bears once again added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with two walks for Baur and George as well as a line drive single to center field by Diorio. The Muckdogs were able to hold the threat with a throw out at home, only allowing one run in making the score 9-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Black Bears once again got the bats going with a hit by pitch on Alemais, a single to right by Pabst advancing Alemais to third and Forgione to take the force out leaving Alemais to score putting them on top 10-2.

The runs kept coming for the Black Bears in the bottom of the eighth with a single to center by Santos trailed by another single to left by Moore. With runners on first and second, Craig was again hit by a pitch that advanced all runners. With bases loaded, Baur hit a sac fly to center to score Santos. George followed Baur with a double to center to score Moore ending the eighth with a score of 12-2.

The Black Bears held off the Muckdogs in their Home Opener at Monongalia County Ballpark with a final score of 12-2! The Black Bears will be back at it again tomorrow for game two of the three game series versus the Batavia Muckdogs. The first pitch is set for 7:05pm and will be West Virginia Day and Fireworks night!
