Slump Busters: Cougars Explode for 16 Runs

Clinton, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars (36-37, 1-3) tied a season-high with 18 hits and beat the Clinton LumberKings (42-31, 3-0), 16-5, on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Yoel Yanqui's RBI single. The LumberKings tied the game in the bottom half on Keegan McGovern's three-run homer. In the fifth, a pair of sacrifice flies from Ernie De La Trinidad and Yan Sanchez pushed the Cougars back in front, 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, the Cougars broke the game open with six runs. Gabriel Maciel doubled home two runs to make it 7-3. The next batter, Jazz Chisholm did the same, pushing the advantage to 9-3. RBI singles by De La Trinidad and Tim Susnara expanded the margin to 11-3 Cougars. De La Trinidad knocked in two more runs, part of a four RBI day, with a single in the seventh. Ryan Grotjohn added to the Cougar total with a run-scoring single of his own. Jazz Chisholm capped the offensive explosion with his 11th homer of the year, a two-run shot, in the eighth.

Jhoan Duran (4-2) earned the win and his first quality start of the year. Duran went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and struck out seven batters. Rafael Pujols and Juan Torres closed out the final three innings for the Cougars.

Clinton used five pitchers. Starter Ryne Inman didn't make it past the second innings after allowing three in the first. Marvin Gorgas (3-1) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead runs in the fifth. Matt Clancy gave up nine runs in 1.1 innings. Sam Delaplane coughed up two runs in 1.2 innings. Shortstop Johnny Adams tossed a scoreless ninth.

The Cougars travel to Peoria to start a three-game series with the Chiefs, beginnings Monday night at Dozer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Follow the action live on AM 1280 WBIG or on kccougars.com.
