Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats tried to use an hour and a half long rain delay to mount a comeback against the Lincoln Saltdogs, but fell 4-1.
The RailCats managed just one run on eight hits while the Saltdogs scored four runs on 13 hits. The rain delay began between the bottom of the 6th inning and the top of the 7th.
The rain delay ended the outings for both starting pitchers, Richard Castillo for the Cats and Shairon Martis for the Saltdogs. Castillo is charged with loss after going six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits. Martis earned the win for a six inning and one run outing.
The RailCats scored first with one run in the 3rd inning. John Holland started the frame with a single and Jarred Mederos followed with a double off the wall that scored Holland. The Cats were unable to get Mederos home from second to extend the lead.
The Saltdogs struck back immediately, with two runs in the top of the 4th. The Dogs piled up five hits including an Austin Darby double to score the pair of runs.
Anthony Cheky started the bottom of the 6th inning with a triple in the right-center gap. Then Chase Harris struck out and Frank Martinez hit a grounder to the Dogs' Tyler Urps at second base. Checky broke for home initially but then stopped and was caught between third and home before getting tagged out at third base. The Cats did not score in the inning.
The Saltdogs recorded three base hits and one run off of reliever Lars Liguori following the rain delay. They got another run in the 8th inning on a Brandon Jacobs solo home run.
Jaime Del Valle was the only RailCat who had a multi-hit day. The switch-hitting catcher improved his average to .353. Chase Harris went 0-4 in his RailCats debut. The game lasted four hours and 18 minutes and was played in front of 3,266 fans at US Steel Yard.
The RailCats fell to 5.5 games back of the Saltdogs in the Central Division standings. The rivals are back at it tomorrow for a 2:10 day game. Coverage begins at 1:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
