Texas Stars News Release

CEDAR PARK, TX - Cristopher Nilstorp denied all 22 shots he faced and Toby Petersen tallied the shootout-winning goal as the Texas Stars defeated the Charlotte Checkers 1-0 in a nine round shootout Saturday night at Cedar Park Center.

The teams traded penalties and scoring chances during an energetic first period, but neither side was able to find the twine. Matt Fraser had a golden opportunity at an empty net during the Stars' first power play, only to clang his shot harmlessly off the left post. The Stars outshot Charlotte 10-6 and killed all three Checkers power play opportunities in the opening frame to keep the game scoreless heading into intermission.

The defensive slugfest continued through the second period as both goaltenders were spotless and the contest remained knotted at zero going into the third. Texas held the visitors to just three shots on goal while unloading 13 of their own in the middle frame, but the Stars were unable to beat Charlotte netminder Dan Ellis.

Texas' excellent penalty killing continued early in the final session after defenseman Patrik Nemeth found himself in the box for high-sticking at 4:39. Nilstorp made multiple big saves to help the shorthanded hosts keep the game scoreless. Antoine Roussel had a chance to end it for the Stars with less than a minute remaining when Reilly Smith found him alone in front of the net, but he could not bury the one-timer. Regulation expired with the score stuck at zero and both teams earning at least one hard-fought point.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime, each team went 1-for-5 to open the shootout. Charlotte's second shooter Jerome Samson put the Checkers in front, but two rounds later Matt Fraser evened things at one when he beat Ellis stick side. The goaltenders each stopped the next four shots they faced to send the shootout to a ninth round. After Nilstorp stonewalled Jeremy Welsh, Petersen beat Ellis through the five-hole to seal the victory and send the 4,809 fans in attendance into a frenzy. The Stars celebration was enhanced as the fans rained stuffed animals onto the ice for the team's 4th annual Teddy Bear Toss.

Stars goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp earned his third straight win, and his second consecutive shutout, stopping all 22 shots in regulation and overtime and 8-of-9 in the shootout. Charlotte starter Dan Ellis denied all 30 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, but only 7-of-9 in the shootout. Texas finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play and held the Checkers' top rated power play to an 0-for-4 night. It was the second meeting between the South Division rivals this year and the second time Texas came out on top of a nine round shootout.

Texas continues its four-game home stand on Wednesday, November 21st as they host the Oklahoma City Barons at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center. Pro-rated full and partial 2012-13 season seat packages are on sale now. For more information on Texas Stars season tickets call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit www.TexasStarsHockey.com.
