ICYMI: Astros starter Brett Adcock struck out seven over five scoreless frames and reliever Kit Scheetz struck out eight over four innings as the Astros shut out the Mudcats 2-0 on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium in Buies Creek.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Carolina offense was held to just two hits in last night's loss and were shutout for the second time this season. The Carolina offense also combined to strike out 15 times; it was their second straight night with 15 strikeouts in a game. They also managed to leave just five total base runners on base, with all five coming between the second and fourth innings.
VS. BC: The Mudcats and Buies Creek Astros face off today in the finale of a three game series at Jim Perry Stadium. The Astros won game two last night 2-0, thus leveling the series at 1-1. The Astros also took three of four versus the Mudcats back in April (4/19-4/22) and lead the season series 4-2. Tonight's game is the 7th of 28 total meetings between the two teams this season.
MUDCATS STARTER: RHP Marcos Diplan has tonight's series finale start against the Astros. Diplan is currently 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA over six starts so far this season with Carolina. He has also totaled 21 strikeouts, 18 walks and a .327 average against over 26.2 innings pitched this season. Diplan last pitched on May 4 against the Wood Ducks and allowed four runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings. He also walked four and struck out one while reaching 85 pitches (51 strikes) his last time out. Diplan's only win of the season came on April 21 against these very same Astros. Diplan earned that victory after holding Buies Creek to just one hit over 5.1 innings on April 21. He also walked five and struck out five in his lone outing against the Astros this year.
OPP STARTER: RHP Jorge Alcala gets tonight's series finale start against the Mudcats. Alcala is 1-3-1 with a 3.79 ERA with 22 strikeouts, 13 walks and a .232 average against over six games, four starts and 19.0 innings this season with the Astros. He last pitched on May 4 in Winston-Salem and ended up with his first win of the season after holding the Dash to a run on two hits in 1.1 innings in relief of starter Abdiel Saldana. Alcala has faced the Mudcats once this season, with his lone start against them coming on April 21 at Five County Stadium. Alcala struck out six, walked two and allowed just one run on four hits over 5.0 innings while suffering his third loss of the season on April 21 against Carolina.
STREAKING: Luis Aviles Jr. is currently in a seven game hitting streak (.370/.357/.407, 10 H, 3 R, 3 RBI)... Dallas Carroll is currently in a six game hitting streak (.333/.333/.333, 8 H, 2 R, 7 RBI).
HEATING UP: Keston Hiura is batting .413/.438/.717 with 19 hits, 11 runs, five doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and a 1.155 OPS over his last 10 games. He's additionally batting .480/.480/.920 with a 1.400 OPS (12 H, 8 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) over his last five games.
