Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (24-34/50-75) used an eighth inning rally to top the Hagerstown Suns (36-22/74-51) 3-2, Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park. The win marked the fourth in a row for the BlueClaws and pushed them to within ten games of .500 in the second half.

Two-time Cy Young Award winner, Roy Halladay took the mound and stole the headlines on what was a beautiful night for the BlueClaws along the Jersey Shore. The Phillies righty made his second Major League rehab assignment and started in the Sally League for the first time in his career.

Halladay began his outing with a groundout, but Tony Renda and Shawn Pleffner followed with back-to-back singles before Wander Ramos lined into a 5-3 double play to end the first inning.

The Suns got to the righty for a run in the second on a single and stolen base by Mike McQuillan and an RBI double by Estarlin Martinez, which gave Hagerstown the early 1-0 lead. Halladay regrouped and went on to retire the next six in a row, including three by way of the K.

Offensively for Lakewood things got going against Suns' southpaw Kylin Turnbull in the second as well. With two down, Larry Greene, Jr. connected on a double to left and scored on an RBI single to right by Carlos Tocci.

The Claws took the lead in the third with another run on two hits. Jiandido Tromp began the frame with a triple to right-center and Angelo Mora followed with a triple to left-center that plated Tromp and put Lakewood in front 2-0.

Halladay returned to the mound with the lead in the fourth and walked the first two hitters before he induced a 6-4-3 double play and struck out Khayyan Norfork to retire the side.

Hagerstown climbed back even with Halladay and the Claws with an unearned run in the fifth. Pedro Severio singled down the line in left and Greene, Jr, misplayed the ball, which allowed the catcher to move to second with nobody out.

Stephen Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt that Chace Numata fielded and fired to first on to get the batter. Severino made his way around third and towards the vacated plate as Charles led Numata home with a throw. The catcher received the throw and swiped the tag on Severino, but the umpire ruled him safe at the plate and the game was tied.

The star pitcher finished the fifth and left two stranded in the sixth to finish his outing. Halladay ended up going the six and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Turnbull matched the BlueClaws starter inning-for-inning as he also went six and allowed just two runs. The lefty allowed the two earned on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Lee Ridenhour took over for Halladay in the seventh and sat down the first six men he faced, in order. Derek Self was the first out of the bullpen for Hagerstown and he retired the side, in order in the seventh, but faltered in the eighth.

With one out, J.P. Crawford hit an infield single off of Self's (0-3) and motored his way from first to third on a single to shallow left off the bat of Willie Carmona. The lefty Bryan Harper took over to face the lefty Charles and got the first baseman to fly out to right, but it was deep enough to score the run and the BlueClaws held the 3-2 lead.

The Suns did their best to make it interesting in the top of the ninth with two on and one out, but Ridenhour (1-0) shut the door with a fly out to center and a strikeout looking to seal the deal and pick up his first professional win.

The BlueClaws and Suns will continue their three-game series with the second game, Wednesday night at 7:05 pm from FirstEnergy Park. RHP Jeb Stefan (4-7, 3.65) gets the nod for Lakewood and he will be matched up against RHP Pedro Encarnacion (10-7, 3.45) of the Suns.
