
Grasshoppers Top Shorebirds 11-10 in 13 Innings

Greensboro, NC - Delmarva Shorebirds' (22-36) third baseman Joel Hutter hit two home runs and drove in a career high five runs, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers (25-32) came from behind to defeat the Shorebirds, 11-10, in 13 innings on Tuesday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
Greensboro plated two runs in the first inning against Matt Taylor. Justin Bohn rolled a one out double down the left field line. After a single by Colin Moran, Jesus Solorzano singled to give Greensboro a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Blake Barber drew a walk to give the Grasshoppers a 2-0 lead.
The Shorebirds took the lead in the second. Greensboro starter Chad James issued two walks. With two outs, Joel Hutter belted his third home run of the season over the left field wall. Hutter was homerless since July 6.
In the top of the third, the Shorebirds built a 5-2 lead. Anthony Caronia led off with a single and moved to third on a double to right field by Torsten Boss. Nik Balog walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Lucas Herbst hit a soft line drive single to left-center to score Caronia. Creede Simpson followed with a sacrifice fly to right to stretch the lead to 5-2.
Greensboro battled back with single runs in the third and fourth inning to trim the deficit to 5-4.
In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds added four runs to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Boss reached on an error by second baseman Blake Barber. He moved to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a single to right. Mason Hope entered out of the bullpen and his first pitch was wild, allowing Boss to score. Then, Simpson doubled a fly ball near the left field line to give the Shorebirds a 7-4 lead. Hutter followed with a long home run to left field to stretch the lead to 9-4.
Shorebirds starter Matt Taylor went five innings, a 13th consecutive start of at least five innings.
Greensboro scored a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left by Tony Caldwell. In the sixth, Greensboro trimmed the gap to 9-6 on a solo home run to right by Cameron Flynn off Sander Beck.
Trailing 9-7 in the eighth inning, Jesus Solorzano hit a two-run home run to left field off Mychal Givens to tie the game at 9-9.
In the top of the tenth, the Shorebirds took the lead. Hutter ripped a one out double to the left field corner. He tagged up to third on a fly out to center by Chase Weems. Then, with two outs and Ronald Barnes on to face Lorenzo, Hutter scored on a soft ground ball single in the infield to give the Shorebirds a 10-9 lead.
Greensboro tied the game off Mark Blackmar in the bottom of the tenth. Barber hit a lead off single and later scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Caldwell.
In the 13th inning, Justin Bohn singled to open the inning and later scored on a game-winning line drive single to left field by Blake Barber.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game two of the series on Wednesday, August 21 at 12:30pm.
