Gnats Split Series With Jackets

Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Augusta, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats finished up a soggy four-game series with a split against the Augusta GreenJackets on Monday. The teams were rained out of Friday and Saturday's match-ups and were forced to play a doubleheader Sunday and Monday afternoons.

The Gnats took game one in a closely contested 3-2 victory. The Sand Gnats put up all the offense they would need in the three-run top of the third. After RF Maikis De La Cruz forced an RBI walk that scored CF Brandon Nimmo, 3B Cole Frenzel delivered a two-run single to put the Gnats' up 3-0.

That was enough run support for Gnats' starter Seth Lugo to capture his second victory with the ball club. Lugo gave up two runs and six hits with three strikeouts through six strong innings.

The GreenJackets would add a run in the fourth and sixth innings but were not able to tie the game up. Joe Biagini picked up the loss for Augusta. Biagini went two and two-thirds innings, gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on one hit and four costly walks.

Game two was not as kind to the Sand Gnats' offense as they were shutout 4-0. Similar to the Gnats in game one, the GreenJackets just needed the fourth inning to do their damage.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Augusta rattled off five hits and forced an errant throw to keep their inning alive. The big blow to Savannah was LF Shawn Payne's two-run double that gave the Jackets some insurance.

Gnats' starter Jake Kuebler gave way to reliever Wanel Mesa, who struggled with the fourth. Mesa went three innings, allowed four runs, three were earned on six hits and two free passes.

The Sand Gnats travel to Kannapolis to take on the Intimidators Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Probable starters: Savannah: Gabriel Ynoa (13-4 2.71) vs. Kannapolis Adam Lopez (3-3 2.98)
