Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - With the score knotted at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Ty Weeden stepped into the batter's box having struckout in his previous three at bats. The first baseman made his next at bat count, delivering an RBI-double and opening the floodgates to a six-run inning for the Drive (45-38, 6-9).
Greenville would plate five more runs during the at bat, securing a 10-5 victory over the Rome Braves (39-47, 4-12) at Fluor Field.
Two batters after Weeden, Ryan Dent followed suit with a double of his own. Mauldin High School product Adam Bullard's (0-1) night came to an end after surrendering an RBI-single to Ryan Lavarnway and consecutive walks to Jeremy Hazelbaker, his fourth, and Zach Gentile.
Jered Stanley's sacrifice fly is where things got dicey for the Braves. Hazelbaker scored on the deep fly ball to right, and both Gentile and Lavarnway advanced. However, a throwing error by first baseman Stephen Shults allowed both runners to cross home plate.
The Braves had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one and a half innings, before Stephen Fife calmed down and the Drive began their comeback. The right-hander retired the next 12 batters, before allowing a single to Matt Kennelly and exiting.
Over that same span Greenville plated four runs to take a one run lead. RBI-groundouts by Zach Gentile and Oscar Tejeda in the second and third innings, respectively, put Drive down by a run. In the fourth, Will Middlebrooks doubled home a pair with two outs.
But the Braves answered in the top of the sixth with a run off reliever Mitch Herold, negating a win for Fife. Rome plated one more run, when it was too late, in the top of the eighth off Felix Ventura. With the win, Herold improved his record to a perfect 3-0 on the year.
The Drive and Braves conclude their four-game series tomorrow evening at Fluor Field with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Stolmy Pimentel (7-3, 2.77 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, making his first start at home in over a month, while Rome counters with left-hander Dimaster Delgado (1-3, 3.52 ERA).
Saturday's game will also feature a tribute to the King of Pop, the late Michael Jackson. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
