Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - Five unearned runs were the difference in the Wood Ducks' (4-6, 39-41) 8-4 defeat to the Red Sox (5-4, 37-40). Anderson Tejeda connected on his 12th homer for the season in the loss, furthering his career-high.
Yohander Mendez only allowed one earned run over six innings of work and 94 pitches. Two unearned stemmed from a fielding error by Brendon Davis at second in the third and put the Red Sox ahead early.
Down East responded in the bottom of the inning by plating three runs with only one hit to their credit. Tejeda led off the inning with a double and the Woodies would load the bases with one out. The bottom third of the order reached on an error, was hit by a pitch, and produced a run with a groundout to push ahead 3-2.
The lead was short-lived as the Red Sox responded with a sac fly in the fifth from Brett Netzer. However the Woodies turned it into their second outfield assisted double play of the game when they caught the trail runner trying to tag for third to end the inning.
Red Sox starter Bryan Mata was done after four, but reliever Algenis Martinez stumped the Wood Ducks. They could only manage two hits (one as Tejeda's homer) over his four innings of relief to earn the win.
Samir Vivas entered for the seventh and allowed a solo homer to Trenton Kemp to lose the tie, 4-3. Then in the eighth, four runs scored on Jairo Beras (three were unearned) to put the game out of reach for the DEWDs.
Game two of the series comes on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. with lefty Sal Mendez (1-0, 2.08) on the mound. He will face right-hander Jake Thompson (3-6, 4.99) in the Sunday Funday festivities presented by Cricket Wireless of Kinston. Kids Club members get in free with a paid adult and can run the bases after the game. Furthermore, Yohander Mendez and Emerson Martinez will be available for autographs when the gates open at 3:00.
