RICHMOND, VA - Erik Swanson lowered his season ERA to an Eastern League-best 0.52, but, the Richmond Flying Squirrels (18-14) completed a comeback win over the Thunder (20-12), 3-1, with a walk-off two-run home run from Dylan Dobson on Thursday night at The Diamond.
Swanson matched his career-high with seven shutout innings in his fifth start of the season for the Thunder. He scattered five baserunners over his nine innings and struck out nine in his outing. His 0.52 ERA is the lowest among Eastern Leaguers and he takes over the league lead with 44 strikeouts on the season.
The Thunder offense managed their only run in the fourth inning when Abiatal Avelino led off the inning with a single and Chris Gittens doubled him in with a shot up the alley in right-center. While Richmond starter Shaun Anderson was able to keep the inning from getting out of hand by picking off Gittens and keeping the Thunder off the board in the other four innings he threw. The Thunder would miss a few opportunities to add to their lead later in the game, going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Richmond tied the game in the eighth inning against James Reeves. With one out Ronnie Jebavy singled and after a walk to Luigi Rodriguez, Miguel Gomez singled in Jebavy with a line drive to left. Jordan Foley entered and got Aramis Garcia to bounce into a double play to end the threat.
In the ninth, Foley allowed a one out single to KC Hobson and pinch-runner Matt Lipka was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. It appeared the teams were headed for extra innings until Jerry Sands worked a two out walk and Dobson followed with a shot that just got over the wall in right-center to give Richmond the walk-off victory.
Abiatal Avelino recorded his third multi-hit game, in nine total, with Trenton with a 2-for-4 effort to lead the Thunder offense.
Your Thunder continue their road trip on Friday night at 6:05pm against the Flying Squirrels. RHP Will Carter (0-1, 5.59) will start for the Thunder, RHP Jordan Johnson (3-3, 2.67) will go for Richmond. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:50pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
