Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The San Antonio Missions plated four unearned runs in the fifth to propel towards the 4-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,568 fans at Hammons Field on Friday night.

Cardinals All-Star RHP Arturo Reyes (L, 5-3) and Missions RHP Elliot Morris (W, 3-7) exchanged a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, before Springfield (3-5, 33-45) dealt the first blow in the bottom of the third. Leading off the inning, SS Aledmys Diaz was hit by a pitch to put a man on with no outs. Diaz raced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Reyes, before coming home on the go-ahead RBI single by All-Star CF Charlie Tilson, lifting the Cardinals into the 1-0 lead.

Springfield doubled the lead in the bottom of the fourth. 2B Bruce Caldwell and C Michael Ohlman started the stanza with consecutive singles, putting two on with nobody down. Two fly outs later, Reyes placed an RBI single to right field, bringing in Caldwell with his first-career RBI for the 2-0 lead.

San Antonio (4-4, 35-43), though, took advantage of three Cardinals miscues to plate four unearned runs against Reyes in the top of the fifth. After an error enabled 3B Duanel Jones to reach first base to begin the inning, Reyes battled back and struck out C Griff Erickson. 1B Luis Domoromo followed by reaching on a miscue as well, putting runners at first and second base. Morris attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Reyes fielded the ball and fired it to third. However, 3B Patrick Wisdom missed the catch, enabling Jones to not only reach third safely but also to come around and score, getting the Missions on the board. After a fielder's choice and a walk, the Missions had the bases loaded with two outs for CF Alberth Martinez. Martinez promptly cleared the bases with a three-run double, catapulting the Missions into the 4-2 advantage.

Reyes kept the Cardinals within striking distance with a scoreless final frame in the sixth, closing his start with no earned runs allowed while striking out five.

However, Morris countered by keeping the Cardinals at only their two runs through his seven-inning outing, before giving way to the relief corps. Missions RHP Stephen Kolscheen tossed a scoreless eighth inning, before RHP Tayron Guerrero (S, 8) dealt a scoreless ninth, closing the 4-2 win for San Antonio.
