Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Mar. 17 - The Maine Red Claws (28-14) took the first game of a two-game series with the Grand Rapids Drive (18-23) on Tuesday night, overcoming a 13-point halftime deficit to come away with a 110-104 overtime win on the road.
The win snaps a two-game road losing streak for the Atlantic Division-leading Red Claws, and is also their third win in a row. The loss for the Drive is their sixth in their last seven games.
The Drive dominated the first half, never trailing and pouring in 33 points in the first quarter alone. They entered halftime with a 60-47 lead, but could not quite sustain their offensive efficiency in the second half.
Maine managed a 27-21 third quarter to bring themselves back within striking distance for the fourth quarter, and then began the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to tie the game with just over eight minutes to go.
From there it was a seesaw battle where the lead changed hands after practically every possession. Despite the Drive leading the for the entirety of the first three quarters, the game finished with 11 lead changes and four ties.
Kevin Murphy drove into the lane and made a difficult layup to put the Drive up by two with 17 seconds remaining, but Tim Frazier responded with a layup of his own, forcing overtime.
The Red Claws clamped down on defense in overtime, not allowing any points until Adonis Thomas' three-pointer with just over 20 seconds to go. This combined with their excellent overtime free-throw shooting secured their win.
Maine had a balanced scoring attack, as five players managed double-digit points. Frazier led the team with 22 points and James Young, on assignment from the Boston Celtics, scored 20.
The Drive also spread the wealth, as all five of their starters scored in double figures, and Nate Wolters scored _ points off the bench. They leaned on their newly-acquired big man Daniel Orton heavily and he responded with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
The Drive shot 50 percent from the field to the Red Claws' 39 percent, but Maine was more effective from three-point range and also earned 12 more free-throw attempts than their counterparts.
A rematch between these two teams is scheduled for Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m. Eastern.
