Cleveland Monsters News Release

Four power play goals and 41 saves from goalie Calvin Pickard were Lake Erie Monsters season highs, but the Rockford IceHogs scored the final four goals of the game as the Monsters (4-4-1-1) fell 5-4 in overtime to the Midwest Division leading IceHogs (8-2-0-1) Tuesday night in Rockford, Illinois. Stefan Elliott and Colin Smith each scored twice for the Monsters, while Paul Carey and Max Noreau each registered two assists. The Monsters were a perfect 4-4 on the power play Tuesday night, and pick up one point in the standings with the overtime loss. The Monsters return to Quicken Loans Arena to host Utica on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Stefan Elliott opened the scoring for the Monsters at 3:50 of the first period on the power play with a wrist shot from just beyond the top of the right circle. Max Noreau and Joey Hishon assisted on Elliott's third goal of the season. Just moments later, the Monsters were granted another power play opportunity, and once again capitalized. For the second straight game, Colin Smith scored for the Monsters, with assists to Karl Stollery and Paul Carey at 5:57 of the opening period. Smith turned on a loose puck in front of the net and fired it past Rockford goalie Michael Leighton.

In the second period, the Monsters power play would go back to work following a power play goal from Rockford's Ville Pokka at 5:19 of the second period, which temporarily cut the Monsters lead to one goal. Smith tapped in a loose rebound in the crease at 6:58 of the second period on the man-advantage for his second goal of the game and third of the season, assisted by Carey and Mike Sgarbossa. Elliott cruised through the right circle and slipped a snap shot under the right arm of Leighton at 13:20 of the second period for his fourth goal of the season and second of the contest, assisted by Noreau and Smith. After two periods, the Monsters led 4-1 and had chased Leighton from the IceHogs net; he was pulled in favor of Scott Darling after his fourth goal allowed.

Rockford scored three goals in the third period to force overtime, with each goal coming at five-on-five. Mark McNeill scored at 1:57 and 14:35 of the final stanza, and with 1:40 remaining, Peter Regin netted the game-tying goal on a long wrist shot from the right boards through traffic in front of Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard. In overtime, Regin scored on a two-on-one rush at 5:10 of the extra frame, after the game had moved to a three-on-three situation per the American Hockey League's newly reformatted overtime structure. Regin's goal in overtime secured the 5-4 win for Rockford.

Pickard stopped 41 of 46 Rockford shots, and is 3-2-2 on the campaign. Darling relieved Leighton and played 31:35, stopping 12 of 12 shots to improve to 4-0-0 in four appearances for the IceHogs. Leighton stopped 10 of 14 shots in 33:20 of work as Rockford's starting goalie.

The Monsters are back in action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they host the Utica Comets. The game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
