Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (36-31) at WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (32-35) RHP Bryan Blough (4-4, 4.66 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Smith (4-2, 2.59 ERA) 7:05 p.m. - Frawley Stadium (Wilmington, DE)
TANNER LIFTS DASH TO COMEBACK WIN Winston-Salem pulled off a thrilling 5-3 victory over Wilmington in the opener of a four-game series Thursday night behind Brent Tanner's heroics. The Dash trailed 3-1 through eight innings, but a Josh Richmond sacrifice fly and a two-out Tanner RBI single on a 1-2 pitch forced extra innings. In the 11th frame, Tanner launched a two-run blast to right-center, his first career High-A home run, that gave the Dash their first lead and proved to be the difference.
COSE LIMITS DAMAGE, BULLPEN ROLLS Jake Cose worked into the seventh inning for the first time in his Dash career, and he twirled a quality start (6.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H). He stranded eight runners and used a double play in each of the first three innings to escape difficult jams. Behind Cose, Terance Marin retired all 10 he faced en route to his fourth win of the season. Cody Winiarski worked around two singles in the 11th for his eighth save, which is one shy of Lynchburg's Nate Hyatt for the CL lead. Overall, the Rocks went 3-for-14 with men in scoring position against the Cose-Marin-Winiarski trio.
NO MORE FEELING BLUE? With Thursday's come-from-behind victory, Winston-Salem is now 10-1 against Wilmington in 2013. Winston has outscored the Blue Crew by a score of 52-21 this year, and Wilmington has failed to score multiple runs in six of the 11 games in the season series. Dating back to the start of last season, the Dash have won 25 of their last 31 versus the Rocks. Since June of 2011, Winston-Salem is 16-4 against the Blue Crew inside Frawley Stadium.
BLOUGH-N AWAY Dash starter Bryan Blough will aim to continue his success against Wilmington this season. Blough, who is tied for second in the CL with 75.1 innings pitched, has given up just one run in 14 frames over two starts against the Blue Crew. In his lone start at Frawley Stadium on April 27, Blough took a no-hitter into the sixth.
MYRTLE BEACH'S MAGIC NUMBER: TWO With three days remaining in the season's first half, the Dash are two games behind first-place Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division standings. As a result, Myrtle's magic number sits at two. The Pelicans held off Carolina by a score of 3-1 in the opener of a five-game, four-day set Thursday in South Carolina. The Birds now own a seven-game winning streak after dropping 12 of their previous 13 games to fall to 30-28. After losing their first meeting of the year, the Pelicans have won nine straight over the Mudcats.
HOMER HAPPY Winston-Salem leads the Carolina League with 17 home runs thus far in June. This recent power surge has propelled the Dash into a tie for the league's lead in homers with Frederick (57), with Lynchburg (56) right on the Dash and Keys' heels. Three of the top ten home run hitters in the Carolina League are on the Dash's roster: Courtney Hawkins (12, 2nd), Chris Curley (11, T-3rd) and Jeremy Farrell (9, T-8th).
DeMICHELE'S DOUBLE DIGITS Dash infielder Joey DeMichele's 0-for-6 effort Thursday night ended his 12-game hitting streak, which is the longest run by a Dash hitter in 2013. During the streak, he hit .367 (18-for-49) with three RBIs and seven runs scored. DeMichele became the fourth Winston-Salem hitter to put together a hitting streak of 10 or more games this season, which is a claim that no other CL club can make.
DASH DOTS Chris Curley has hit safely in eight consecutive games dating back to June 6...During this run, Curley is hitting .429 (15-for-35) with two home runs, seven RBIs and eight runs scored...The Dash improved to a CL-best 5-1 in extra innings, a record that includes three wins in as many tries on the road...A win today would propel the Dash six games above .500 for the first time in 2013...Courtney Hawkins set a 2013 Dash high and a career high with five strikeouts Thursday.
