THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Lakewood 3-2 in 12 innings on Thursday. Art Charles hit a two-run homer in the fourth to push the BlueClaws in front. Walker Gourley tripled in Max Moroff in the fifth and Stetson Allie hit a solo home run in the sixth to even the score. In the bottom of the 12th, Josh Bell tripled with two down, Allie was intentionally walked, and Eric Wood singled to right field for the win. West Virginia starter Tyler Glasnow struck out 12 over five innings while the bullpen struck out 12 more over the next seven innings. Tom Harlan earned the win with an inning and a third of relief while Jeb Stefan took the loss.
24 K GOLD: West Virginia's pitching staff matched the second highest strikeout tally in league history with 24 on Thursday night. The league record was set by the Asheville Tourists on August 13, 2000 when they struck out 30 Hickory Crawdads in a 20 inning game. The Power tied the effort by the Piedmont Boll Weevils, who combined to strike out 24 Delmarva hitters over 19 innings on July 24, 2000. League records date back to 1960.
BLUE PERIOD: West Virginia continues its' season series against Lakewood this evening. The Power and BlueClaws will play 23 more times over the remainder of the season (25% of the rest of the schedule), including a total of eight games during the first half. West Virginia trails 55-58 in the all-time series. After Thursday's win, the Power are only one game under .500 at home in the all-time set (33-34) and two games under at FirstEnergy Park (22-24).
ONE DOZEN: Tyler Glasnow became the third pitcher in Power history to record 12 strikeouts in a single game and the first during the Pirates affiliation. Zach Braddock was the most recent pitcher to record a dozen strikeouts in a game, accomplishing the feat on April 20, 2006 against Greensboro. Derek Miller set the bar at 12 on June 22, 2006 against Kannapolis. Glasnow has struck out 62 batters this season (39 this month) and is now second in the league behind only Charleston's Rafael De Paula (74 K over 45.1 IP).
11 LOOKING FOR 12: Walker Gourley extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games with a first inning single last night. Gourley is batting .341 during the streak, which has surpassed Raul Fortunato's early April run as the longest by a Power player this season.
TWO TIMES THREE: On Tuesday, Stetson Allie hit two home runs in a single game for the third time this season and hit his 13th of the year last night. The infielder is now tied the league lead with Hickory's Ryan Rua, and after only 45 games played, is five behind Willy Garcia's team high from the entire 2012 season. Allie also hit two home runs on April 13 at Ashville and April 29 at Savannah.
#WINNING: West Virginia is 15-7 in May and has clinched at least a .500 record this month. The Power and Lexington Legends have the best May records so for with eight games left to play. August won a league-best 16 games during April in 24 chances (a .667 winning percentage). The Power and Legends have a .682 winning percentage in May.
PROMO UPDATE- REDNECK NIGHT: The award-winning Redneck Night is back on Saturday, May 25. The event will feature an appearance by Duck Dynasty's Mountain Man and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a duck call. The 2012 version of this promotion was named as the best theme night in Minor League Baseball.
POWER POINTS: Josh Smith was promoted back to the Power roster on Wednesday and Pittsburgh transferred Orlando Castro to Jamestown, though Castro is not expected to miss a turn in the rotation... Stetson Allie is riding an eight-game hitting streak, batting .424 with five home runs and 12 runs batted in dating back to May 17.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh knocked off Chicago 4-2 to clinch a series sweep. Andrew McCutchen had three hits and drove in a pair to lead the Buccos... Indianapolis beat Buffalo 7-4... Altoonaâs game at Reading was suspended in the eighth inning with the score even at two... Bradenton blitzed Tampa 12-4 for the second straight game. Chris Lashmet and Eric Avila drove in three apiece from the bottom of the order.
