Singles Subdue 'Dads in 7-5 Loss

Hickory, NC - What was billed as a battle of staff aces between the Hickory Crawdads and Kannapolis Intimidators, instead turned into a small ball demonstration by Kannapolis. The Intimidators slapped their way to 13 hits, all singles, while also swiping five bases resulting in the 'Dads 7-5 loss in front of 4,334 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
C.J. Edwards of Hickory and Jake Cose of Kannapolis came into the Friday night's game as two of the top pitchers in the South Atlantic League. The duo even pitched to a 3-3 tie through four innings with each club scoring one run in the first and two in the second.
The 'Dads answered the Intimidators tally in the top of the first with a Nomar Mazara RBI single in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 1-1. Then in the fourth, Hickory once again matched Kannapolis' output with a two-RBI base knock from Joe Maloney, once again knotting the game at 3-3.
Cose settled down in the fifth however, while Edwards continued to be plagued by seeing-eye singles and "dying quail" base hits. The Intimidators chased the 'Dads ace with two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, before plating single runs in the sixth and seventh off the Hickory bullpen to take a 7-3 advantage.
The Crawdads would rally with a Lewis Brinson triple and a Nick Williams RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to cut the score to 7-4, while Joey Gallo launched a solo homer to right with two outs in the ninth to narrow the deficit to 7-5. Ryan Rua would follow with a hit-by-pitch to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Mazara, but the right-fielder struck out looking to end the game and snap the 'Dads 5-game winning streak.
Hickory struck out 17 times in the loss, 11 of them looking against the wide strike zone of home plate umpire Brian Peterson.
In a bit of silver lining, the 'Dads did welcome Williams back to the lineup exactly one month after his last game. The 19-year-old outfielder went 0-5 in his return with an RBI. Maloney finished the night with his second straight multi-hit game going 2-4 with 2 RBI, while Gallo went 2-4 with a homer, walk and two runs scored.
Cose (3-3) earned the win for Kannapolis with a career-high 13 strikeouts over six innings pitched, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks. Edwards (5-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits, two walks, and five strikeouts during his four plus innings of work. Intimidators' reliever Stew Brase (1) earned his first save of the season.
The loss drops Hickory to 26-20 on the year while Kannapolis improves to 16-28. The 'Dads and Intimidators will square off again Saturday in game two of their four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
