New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - In another back-and-forth nail-biter, the Fisher Cats (23-24) pounded out six doubles on Wednesday night, but they could've used one more in a 5-4 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs (26-18) in ten innings. The defeat is the team's second straight, leaving them in need of a victory on Thursday morning to split the series.
The Fisher Cats opened the scoring first, netting a run on a double and an error in the top of the second inning. Portland answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs against starter Ryan Tepera to take a 2-1 lead.
The teams next rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth. Brian Van Kirk and Sean Ochinko each drove home runs in the top of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Christian Vazquez answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer off Tepera to put the Dogs back in front, 4-3.
It stayed that way until New Hampshire pieced together another run in the seventh. Ryan Schimpf began the rally with a two-out single followed by a two-out walk to Clint Robinson. Brad Glenn stepped up and tied the game by drilling a double to left to plate Schimpf and even the score at 4-4.
That was still the score when the Fisher Cats went down 1-2-3 in the top of the tenth. In the bottom, Vazquez laced a one-out triple to left to set up the game-winning hit for Heiker Meneses against Dustin Antolin (L; 0-1).
Pete Ruiz (1-1) earned the win for Portland tossing three scoreless innings. He limited New Hampshire to just one base runner over the final three innings.
The teams will now wrap up the series in the finale on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.. LHP Sean Nolin (2-0, 1.17) looks for his third win of the year against rehabbing Red Sox pitcher Franklin Morales (0-0, 0.00).
