Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH- After starting the season on the disabled list with an oblique muscle injury, Bowie slugger Brandon Waring is starting to hit like his normal self.
The all-time Bowie home run leader, Waring enjoyed a spectacular night against the Aeros Tuesday, going 4-5, with a three-run homer during a 13-2 Baysox win at Canal Park.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Aeros (20-24), which represents the longest losing streak of the season. The Aeros are just 4-9 against the Baysox.
Waring entered the game hitting .090, having collected just six hits in his first 67 at-bats since being activated in late April. One of those hits came Monday when he helped ignite a rally that led to a Bowie win. On Tuesday, he stroked a three-run shot to left field off Jordan Cooper (1-2) in his first plate appearance to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.
The blast by Waring, his third of the season and his 58th in a Bowie uniform, came after back-to-back singles by Aaron Baker and Luis Martinez.
Waring, a 27-year-old first baseman who started his career in the Cincinnati organization, added a single in the fourth, a lead-off double in the sixth, and a lead-off single in the ninth. The only time he failed to reach base was the seventh when he struck out against Aeros reliever Rob Bryson. Waring has 12 career triples, but could not collect a three-bagger for the cycle.
Akron's Cedric Hunter walloped a solo homer to the bullpen in right off Baysox starter and winner Mike Wright (6-0) in the third inning to make it 3-1. Hunter joined the Aeros from Columbus on Monday and was playing just his second game with the club.
After the Baysox extended the lead to 5-1, Jesus Aguilar singled home Tyler Holt in the fifth after Holt had doubled to make it 5-2. It was Aguilar's league-leading 36th RBI of the season.
Cooper lasted 5 2/3 innings for the Aeros, giving up five runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out four. The Baysox (21-21) blew the game open with seven runs in the seventh against Bryson and Jose Flores to make it 12-2.
Wright, ranked as one of the top prospects in the Orioles organization, moved into a tie for the EL lead in wins with six. He lasted five innings and worked around a season-high four walks. The Aeros threatened by loading the bases with one out in the second, but Wright wiggled out of trouble by retiring Ronny Rodriguez on a pop-up, and striking our Giovanny Urshela.
The Aeros left nine men on base, and had three runners thrown out on the bases. They also hit into one double play.
The Aeros and Baysox will play game three of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05. RHP Kevin Gausman (2-4, 3.11) will start for Bowie, while RHP Brett Myers (0-0, 0.00) will make his second major league rehab start for Akron. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
