Comeback Falls Short in 5-3 Loss at Portland

PORTLAND, Maine - Clint Robinson extended his hitting streak to six games, but the Fisher Cats (23-23) saw the end of their season-best four-game winning streak with a 5-3 loss on Tuesday night in Portland (25-18). Despite the loss, the Fisher Cats are still 4-1 on their seven-game road trip heading into game three with the Sea Dogs Wednesday night.

Portland wasted no time jumping out to a lead. Losers in seven of ten games coming into the night, the Dogs got a first-inning home run over the Maine Monster from Michael Almanzer to take a 2-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats answered back in the fourth in their second time through the line-up against Brandon Workman. Robinson started the scoring with his first triple of the season to right field. He scored on a Brad Glenn groundout to tie the game at 2-2. After a walk to Adam Loewen, Sean Ochinko's two-out single put New Hamsphire on top, 3-2.

McGuire (L; 2-4) kept that lead through six innings before he and the Fisher Cats ran into trouble in the seventh. The first two men reached in the inning to end McGuire's outing. Tyson Brummett followed out of the bullpen, recording the first two outs. Before he could get out of the inning, he issued a walk to load the bases. That two-out base-on-balls was costly because Matt Spring delivered a three-run double off the wall in left to put Portland ahead 5-3.

New Hampshire had one more chance to pull back into the game, getting a two-out double by Amadeo Zazueta in the ninth. But, like several previous opportunities earlier in the game, the Fisher Cats stranded the runner at second to end the game.

The series continues on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The Fisher Cats will send Ryan Tepera (4-3, 3.76) to the hill against Portland righty Matt Barnes (3-1, 4.62). Radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
