Suns Open Series against Greensboro with 12-3 Win

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (25-15) opened up their three game series with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (17-25) with a 12-3 victory. It was the second straight home win for the Suns and improved their home record to 10-7.

The Suns struck early in the first inning when RF Brandon Miller hit a ground ball which was bobbled by 3B Matt Juengel and allowed 2B Tony Renda to score. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms then singled to center which scored 1B Shawn Pleffner. A sacrifice fly by LF Wes Schill brought home DH Wander Ramos for a 3-0 lead. Catcher Craig Manuel then belted a 3-run home run over the right-center field fence to give Hagerstown a 6-0 lead.

With one out in the third inning Piwnica-Worms walked which was followed by a Schill single. Manuel struck again when he smacked a double to the left field corner which scored Piwnica-Worms and Schill to give the Suns an 8-0 lead.

The Suns scored four more in the fifth inning. Third baseman Matt Juengal's second error of the game led to another pair of Hagerstown runs. Later in the inning RF Brandon Miller singled home two more runs to make the score 12-0 Hagerstown.

Greensboro finally got on the board in the ninth inning when LF Cameron Flynn hit a 3-run home run over the right-center field fence. It was Flynn's second home run on the season and 26th as a team.

RHP Dixon Anderson (4-1) earned the win for Hagerstown. Anderson pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out three and walking two. RHP Mason Hope (2-3) took the loss for Greensboro. He threw 2.2 innings, giving up eight earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two.

The Suns continue their series against the Grasshoppers on Tuesday May 21. Hagerstown will send RHP Ronald Pena (2-2) to the mound for his seventh start of the season. He will square off against RHP Scott Lyman (1-3) for the Grasshoppers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
