Carolina Mudcats News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - The starting battery played a big hand in the Carolina Mudcats' 6-2 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Sunday afternoon at Calvin Falwell Field inside City Stadium. Cody Anderson became the first hurler to five wins, and Tony Wolters crushed a home run off the right field foul pole. Carolina (15-28) snapped a six-game losing streak to the Lynchburg (23-18).
Anderson (5-2) tossed his longest outing the year, shutting out the Hillcats over 6.1 innings. He scattered four hits, and struck out seven. A fourth inning walk to Robby Hefflinger was his first since April 7. It snapped a span of 26.1 innings without allowing a base on balls. It was his third straight quality start.
Jarett Miller (3-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over six innings.
Francisco Lindor and Jordan Smith teamed to open the scoring in the first against Miller. With one away, Lindor singled on a ground ball to first. The hit extended his on-base streak to league-high 26 games. Jordan Smith followed with a triple to the left field corner, plating Lindor for a 1-0 lead. Charlie Valerio sent a fly ball to deep center for out number two, but Smith tagged and scored for a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Wolters demolished a fly ball that bounced off the right field foul pole for a round tripper. Jordan Smith scored on the play for a 4-0 lead.
Yhoxian Medina put the game away for Carolina in the ninth. With two on, and two out, Medina blooped a single into right-center. The knock scored Luigi Rodriguez and Joe Sever for a 6-0 lead.
Lynchburg scored a pair of runs of reliever J.D. Reichenbach in the ninth for the final margin.
Tyler Naquin finished 0x5, snapping a team-high, 10-game hitting streak in the win.
