Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (May 17th, 2013) -- The Nuts offense exploded for 10 runs across two innings in a come-from-behind 12-8 win over the Storm on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
Modesto second-baseman Taylor Featherston had another monster game, driving in five runs including a go-ahead grand-slam in the sixth inning to propel the Nuts to victory.
Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Modesto loaded the bases with three walks against Luis De La Cruz (2-4), and with a 2-0 count Featherston pummeled one over the left-field fence to put the Nuts in front for the first time in the contest.
Modesto would add two more runs in the inning to plate a season-high of 12 runs on 12 hits and seven walks in the game.
Kraig Sitton (1-1), who tossed a scoreless inning and a third became the pitcher of record after the big six-run inning.
Lake Elsinore raced out to an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the second against Nuts starter Tyler Anderson, including a 2-run triple by Corey Spangenberg. Anderson would leave after walking the first batter of the fourth with an apparent injury.
Modesto cut their deficit in half in the second with a 2-run double by Brian Humphries (2-for-4, 2 RBI), who joined Featherston (3-for-5, 5 RBI) and Tyler Massey (3-for-5, 3 RBI) with a multi-hit and multi-run effort.
After the Storm retook a four-run lead with two against Anderson and reliever Geoff Parker in the fourth, Modesto rallied against Storm starter Matt Jackson to tie the game at six.
Featherston plated the first run on an RBI double, Massey drove in a pair with a 2-run triple, and Ryan Casteel knotted the game with a sac-fly.
Lake Elsinore took their second lead of the night on an RBI groundout from Jace Peterson in the top of the sixth, but it would not last as the Nuts sent 10 to the plate in their six-run bottom of the sixth.
Featherston is now 6-for-14 with 10 RBI's in the three-game series with five extra-base hits.
Modesto, who has now won nine of their last 10 at home and are 13-7 overall, will go for a four-game sweep over the Storm tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Reigning Cal League Pitcher of the Week Chris Jensen (1-3, 3.45) will take the hill for Modesto against RHP James Needy (0-1, 3.23) for the Storm.
